As a true motorsport enthusiast, I spent most of my past weekend watching the Le Mans 24h race. This is a truly spectacular event and it showcases a few important lessons, not only related to motorsport, but to life in general. Let me share with you what I picked up.
1. Perseverance is key
Toyota FINALLY won its first Le Mans after years of heartbreak and failure (Read all about it here), which include the 2016 Le Mans when their car, leading the race, broke in the last few minutes. Sometimes we really just need to persevere, to keep pushing, to keep going at it, in spite of all the previous failures. To have the guts to give it another go.
2. Reducing mistakes is often more important than producing perfection
If there is one thing the Le Mans 24h has proven time and again it is that making sure your car gets around the track for 24 hours is much more important than how fast your car can get around the track in one lap. Key to surviving, and thriving, is the minimalisation of errors. Not only during preparation but also during execution.
3. Teamwork is the only way to win
As much as people would think otherwise, motor racing is a team sport. And the Le Mans 24h certainly shows that. It takes the contribution, precision and courage of hundreds of people to make a success. Right from the individual who moulds the tiniest parts, right through to the engineer who needs to manage his car around the track.
Thanks for your time.
Francis
PS: Thanks to my dad for sharing this experience with me, and thanks to my wife for allowing me to binge a bit!
